How to Play Your Guitar - Revealed, 3 Keys to Properly Practice Your Guitar!

By Jeremiah La Follette

In the beginning stages of learning guitar there is much to learn. From learning how to play your guitar chords, scales, notes, and everything else that comes with the guitar, it can be quite daunting where to start or where to begin.

Of everything that you will learn while discovering how to play your guitar, the absolute best thing you can do is to properly learn how to practice your guitar.

I would like to share with you three Keys to properly practice your guitar.

1. Begin Practicing

2. Find Your Guitar Zone

3. Module Practicing

1. Begin Practicing:  While learning how to play your guitar, the number one thing that you can do is begin practicing. Now this sounds easier said than done. Every guitar player knows that they should practice, but the actual act of practicing can be a totally different thing. Practicing can be fun, however, in the early stages of learning your instrument it's important to set and create great guitar habits. Of all the best habits you can create in the beginning stages of learning guitar is to actually pick up your instrument, sit down, and practice. Seriously, you'll discover it's very easy to wander off from your practice schedule and find yourself playing what you already know how to play. Refuse to let this happen to you.  While practicing, actually practice. There will be times in your learning curve that practice will be challenging.  Like  homework, be prepared that sometimes you just have to do it. Once you get started practicing your guitar you'll find that you're playing time flies by very quickly.

2. Find Your Guitar Zone:  In order to not get to distracted when practicing your guitar, the best thing you can do is to find your guitar zone. Your guitar zone is that place when learning how to play your guitar that will allow you to be completely focused on practicing your instrument. The best way to do this is to find a quiet area, preferably a room, with no distractions such as TV playing in the background. If you're finding that there is too much distraction around the area that you're practicing in, you might have to find another time when no one is around and when it is quiet. If appropriate, ask those around you during your time of learning to try to be more quiet in what they're doing. On the flip-side of the coin make sure that while you are in your guitar zone that you are considerate of those around you. In other words try to refrain from practicing at 1 AM in the morning with your amplifier set at 11.

3. Module Practicing:  If you apply module practicing to your practice schedule you will learn how to play your guitar at a faster rate than guitar players who just practice one thing at a time. Module practicing, is taking different sections of what you're learning and focusing on those sections in 10 minute units. For example, if you only have a half hour to practice then you would practice scales for 10 minutes, chords for 10 minutes, and practice your site reading for the final 10 minutes. The great thing about module practicing is that you will find that instead of learning just one skill on the guitar, you can learn many skills all at once on the guitar.

Apply these three Keys to properly practicing your six string and you will learn how to play your guitar in no time. Remember, setting good habits at the beginning of your guitar journey will set you up for years of enjoyment on the guitar.
